Many individuals who were immigrants once, have become citizens or permanent residents in Canada have family members who are living in different countries, and they often desire to bring their parents or grandparents to live with them in Canada. One such program is the Super Visa, which is a type of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) designed to allow parents and grandparents to live with their children or grandchildren in Canada for up to five years. It’s a visa that provides multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years. When you enter Canada, a border services officer will confirm how long you can stay.Like a visitor visa, a Super Visa can be applied online.

When applying for a Super Visa, there are a few essential things that you must keep in mind.

  • Super visa application must accompany a letter of invitation from their child or grandchild, explaining the plans for their care and the information about the inviter’s family size.
  • Inviterhas to prove that they have enough funds to support you during your visit by meeting the Low-Income Cut-off (LICO) minimum for their family unit size.
  • Evidence proving that you are indeed the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Inviter must submit a copy of their Canadian Citizenship Certificate or Permanent Residence Card.

It is mandatory to have private medical insurance from a Canadian company.

  • The insurance must be paid in full or in instalments with a deposit.
  • It should be valid for a minimum of one year starting from the date of entry into Canada.
  • The insurance policy should cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation and must provide a minimum emergency coverage of $100,000.
  • Obtaining insurance quotes will not be considered as proof of insurance.

Applicants must also:

  • apply for a super visa from outside Canada.
  • have your visa printed outside Canada (wait for visa office instructions)
  • be allowed to enter Canada

  • take an immigration medical exam

  • meet certain other conditions.
